Summer in the City

"Summer in the City" event generates over $60,000. Thank you supporters of Shepherd!

When you combine star-studded chefs, finely aged wines, dynamic people and a great cause, you experience an evening you’ll never forget.

This was the hope and objective of Shepherd Center Society (SCS), Shepherd Center’s 27- to 45-year olds volunteer group, which successfully unveiled the completely transformed version of its “Summer in the City” event on June 22, 2011.

The original Summer in the City event built SCS membership and provided a casual wine and cheese party for SCS members and non-members. While the event was a success, SCS, with help from its fundraising partner, National Distributing Company, decided to explore ways to enhance the experience for both attendees and Shepherd Center.

Co-chaired by SCS members Alden Potts and Gena Bryant, the made-over Summer in the City event was impressive. Held at Greystone in Piedmont Park, this year’s affair featured live music and paired a sophisticated selection of single-taste entrees – prepared by some of Atlanta’s most prestigious chefs – with complementary wines from event sponsor National Distributing Company. A combination auction and drawing gave the evening an added twist. Auction items related to the event’s fine food and wine theme.

The enhanced Summer in the City event was a win-win for everyone, organizers said. Not only did attendees enjoy a wonderful evening filled with delicious food and wine, memorable auction items and new friends, but Shepherd Center increased its awareness among a wider audience, engaged potential volunteers and benefits from the opportunity to raise funds for its life-changing work.

Funds raised will go to the hospital’s Annual Fund, which supports programs such as Shepherd’s Andrew C. Carlos Multiple Sclerosis Institute (named after the former executive vice president, treasurer and director of National Distributing Company). Specifically, funds will go to the institute’s MS General Support Fund, Shepherd’s MS Research Fund and other related programs that subsidize medication, treatment, special equipment and items that may not be covered by insurance, but are critically important in the treatment of people with MS.

Companies and individuals sponsored the event at levels ranging from $500 to $25,000, with those at the top sponsorship levels given exclusive access to a special, pre-event VIP reception.

With the delectable food and wine pairings, the combined auction/drawing and the meaningful cause, this year’s Summer in the City event is on its way to becoming a popular annual event. “I think people will miss out on an extraordinary event if they don’t come each year, especially since we’ve partnered with such an exciting business like National Distributing Company, which can do so much to make the event successful,” says event co-chairman Alden Potts.
