National Distributing Company
Company History
With a simple handshake, two families came together to create one of the top wine, spirits and beer distributors
in the country. In 1942, Chris Carlos welcomed Al Davis as an equal partner in the Dixie Wine Company, a business
Carlos had founded in 1935. Today, that partnership has blossomed into National Distributing Company (NDC), the
fourth largest alcoholic beverage distributor in the U.S.
Founded on the principles of being the very best at servicing the needs of its people, its suppliers, its customers
and its community, NDC is one of the most proficient alcoholic beverage distribution networks in the country, boasting
an eight-state, $1.4 billion sales empire. Growth has come through both internal strategy and acquisitions, which began
in Florida in 1947. NDC currently has operations in the District of Columbia and eight states: Georgia, Florida, Ohio,
Colorado (entered in 1980), New Mexico (1991), South Carolina (1993), Maryland (1997) and Virginia (1997).
Under the leadership of the Carlos and Davis families, NDC has grown into an industry leader in terms of service,
marketing and customer satisfaction, as annual customer surveys have shown NDC in all of its markets to be the #1 choice
of customers. NDC is also well known for its strong supplier relations and its use of innovative technology to help both
operations and sales. For instance, NDC has developed proprietary software for on- and off-premise category management,
making it easy for the retailer to see where to maximize profits.
But the Davis and Carlos families are more than just business leaders; they are community and civic icons. Many
educational, cultural and community buildings bear their families’ names, reflecting their legacy of giving back to
the community. This philanthropic philosophy spreads deep through NDC, as the company’s divisions and its employees
support a number of worthy causes on both a national and local level.
Today, National Distributing Company is entering a new era in its history. Although still family-owned and
operated by the Davis and Carlos families, NDC has restructured its management team and developed an advisory board
to provide the company with the diversity and flexibility to manage the changing needs of its customers and suppliers.
The new corporate board provides counsel and additional leadership, with outsiders working directly with the
shareholders and senior management. The expertise from business leaders outside of the beverage alcohol industry not
only brings a unique perspective on the industry to NDC, but also helps the company grow as a business overall.
In addition to naming Jay Davis as Chairman and CEO, these new roles include vesting business management in former
Young’s Market Company CEO Charlie Andrews as President and Chief Operating Officer and former NDC CFO Greg Johnson
as Chief Administrative Officer, and strengthening the strategic roles of John Carlos as Vice Chairman and Treasurer,
Jerry Rosenberg as Vice Chairman and Secretary, and Chris M. Carlos as Executive Vice President. These three will
continue to work full time for NDC with a new focus on long-term business initiatives and strategic supplier
relationships.
With 60 years of excellence under its belt, NDC is now poised to lead the industry into the future.
